Security Steps To Take Before Listing Your Home On A Short-Term Rental Site

Blog

Many homeowners have found that they can earn extra money with little effort by listing their home on a short-term rental site. When they're out of town on business or staying with friends, they can open their home to people looking for a night's accommodation at less money than hotels charge. If you're interested in exploring this money-making opportunity, it's vitally important that you make the security of your home and your valuables a priority. If you don't have a home alarm system, now is the time to invest in one. Here are some other things you'll want to do before you list your home.

Set Up A Unique Pass Code For Guests

A home alarm system won't be much value if you keep it turned off while someone else is in your home. You don't want to give away your pass code, so make sure you get a system that allows multiple accounts to be created. You can then set up a "guest" account with a unique pass code. This way, your short-term lodging guests can set the system when they leave your residence and disarm it when they arrive back. And, depending on the system, you may also request they keep the exterior sensors armed even when they're in the home.

Install Interior Door Locks

If you want to keep your guest out of certain rooms — namely, the master bedroom and your home office — don't just rely on telling the person to stay out. Instead, install locks on these doors, and don't forget to take the keys with you, rather than leave them in the home. If your security system allows it, you might also wish to have sensors installed on these doors. This way, if someone attempts to gain access, the sensor will note the intrusion and send you an alert on your mobile device.

Invest In A Safe

You don't want to leave valuables in plain sight while someone is staying at your home, but it might not be practical to pack these important items up and take them with you. A simple solution is to buy a safe and load it up before your guest arrives. It's ideal to also locate the safe in your bedroom or in an area that is off-limits to your guest. If this isn't possible due to the small size of your home, make sure the safe is adequately hidden for added security.

Creating A More Secure Business

I have always been one of those people who loves to get involved with business, but a few years ago, I realized that my company had a few security problems. We were losing a lot of money to shoplifting, and it seemed like every time I turned around another employee decided to steal from us. I started thinking about ways to make things better, and so I started focusing on creating a more secure business. This blog is all about working with security teams, making positive changes to your business, and avoiding the kinds of debilitating losses that can come from theft.
